Tributes have poured in from all over the world as news broke today of the tragic passing of Linkin Park front man Chester Bennington on what would have been Chris Cornell’s 53rd birthday.
Having performed at Cornell’s funeral earlier this year Bennington’s death has been ruled as suicide. A spokesman for the Los Angeles County coroner, Brian Elias, said authorities were investigating Bennington’s death as an apparent suicide at Palos Verdes Estates, a small coastal city near Los Angeles, but no additional details were available. He was only 41.
Commenting on Cornell’s untimely passing, Bennington penned a heartfelt Instagram post to Cornell, his friend on Instagram: “Your voice was joy and pain, anger and forgiveness, love and heartache all wrapped up into one. I suppose that’s what we all are.
“I can’t imagine a world without you in it. I pray you find peace in the next life.”
Linkin Park shot to fame when album ‘ Hybrid Theory’ released in 2000 went multi- platinum. They adapted nu-metal with a blend of rap -metal to bring a radio- friendly sound that was unique and ground breaking. Over subsequent albums the band broke new ground with an ever changing sound. It was a sound that won the band multiple Grammy’s and saw them collaborate with artists such as Jay-Z , selling over 70 Million albums world wide.
In a statement from Cornell’s family have come out to offer support to Bennigton’s surviving family :
“The Cornell family is overwhelmed by the heartbreaking news about Chester Bennington which tragically comes so soon after their family’s own loss,” a Cornell family spokesperson said.
“They open up their loving arms to Chester’s family and share in the sorrow with all those who loved him.”
He is survived by second wife Talinda, and six children.
