News: Electronic Guest drop new single

EG 2017LA duo Electric Guest are living pretty dynamic lives if their latest video for ‘Back For Me’ is anything to go by. The brand-new clip for their latest single from the critically acclaimed sophomore album, Plural (which is out now via Dew Process / UMA), sees the band members Asa Taccone and Matthew Compton experiencing some of the richest moments life has to offer, albeit from fairly opposite ends of the spectrum.

One minute the duo is seemingly living the music industry high life, cutting loose in an LA strip club like they’re in the middle of a hip-hop clip. The next they’re taking off for impromptu explorations of the wilderness, like they’re in the middle of a Bear Grylls adventure. But all together the video is a bright and beautiful affair, and perfectly complements the up-tempo single’s simultaneously glamorous and minimalist approach.

The video premiered on the cultural hotspot Papermag.com, who said of the clip that it proves “champagne and strippers aren’t everything,” something Asa Taccone seems to agree with, who describes the video’s production as an oddly family affair – considering some of its imagery.

“We made this the same way we did the ‘Dear To Me’ video-with a lot of help from our friends,” says Taccone. “From the strip club up the street from Matthew & I’s houses, to driving my own car, this was a family affair. All our friends came through for the club scenes & our boy Jesse Heath’s directing made it a smooth handful of days. Shout out to the girls at the club for making it so fun.”

He also says he likes the contrasting imagery of the clip leads people to take pause and consider what its message really is.

“One of production people asked me after the first day, ‘Is this video about what to do when the illusion doesn’t fill you up? Or maybe it’s just a strip club video?’ I didn’t answer her but I was glad those were the questions she was asking.”

‘Back For Me’ is Electric Guest’s is just latest single to be lighting up the airwaves in Australia. The song has been on high rotation at Double J, and followed on from ‘Dear To Me’, the duo’s synth-driven first single from Plural that scored instant triple j reaction.

Recorded in their hometown of LA and, Plural was released after a five-year hiatus since the release of their breakout debut, Mondo. Despite that extended absence, Plural is a record that finds Electric Guest at the absolute top of their game, infusing their version of electronic r’n’b with an even more confident, adventurous spirit than even Mondo displayed.

Co-produced by the band themselves, along with the likes of John Hill (Rihanna, Santigold, M.I.A.), Cole MGN (Nite Jewel, Ariel Punk’s Haunted Graffiti) and Lars Stalfors (HEALTH, Coldwar Kids), the record also features several off-the-cuff collaborations that appear across Plural, including an impromptu collaboration with baroque pop star Joanna Newsom and the Haim sisters. And despite an approach that saw the band use spare instrumentation and recording techniques, the album has proven to be much more than the sum of its parts with vibrant and joyful pop sound that has been heralded both internationally, as well as by local outlets, including The Music, The Brag, and Music Feeds.
